Tricylce Nappy Cake...

I am a glutton for punishment I am sure of it......yes I  am..I made this nappy cake in Febuary but never got around to posting it...

Don't get me wrong I wanted too but kept putting it off as I wanted to make sure I had the instructions written out clearly so you could follow it easy...I hope I have done that.....enjoy...

I always seem to bite off more than I can do.

This Nappy cake was almost the death of me  (just kidding ).I was going to do Kerry a normal  nappy cake to use as a decoration for her shower but then I heard about  a Tricycle Nappy Cake..

This is the normal type of nappy cake I usually make. Its great but I wanted something special for Kerry and baby....

I googled nappy cakes and was amazed at how great they looked and said yep I can do that........famous last words (ha ha ha )

Below is the way I do things..... my way of doing things is  typical Dee fashion I follow directions only so far I change them along the way.I go by sight so if it doesn't look right even though that's whats it is suppose to look like I will change it. So do the same use these steps as a guide line and have  fun with it.......Fun! yeah ha ha ha...

To make a tricycle nappy cake you will need the following........

Nappies ( I used around  54 Huggies newborn nappies ).
2 x baby wraps.
1  x socks.
2 x bibs (I ended up using only 1 )so why am I saying 2 for then...get two different sizes then you can see what looks best....that's why.
1x burp cloth.
baby bottle or baby cup.
ribbon.I bought a roll which had around 5 metres on it.It went around  3 wheels and a bow for the front of the trike.
rubber bands.
toilet roll.-optional.
a few small safety pins-you may use them you may not....

I  used a cake pan to make my wheels...I found a spring form pan (it was the only 8inch pan I had so I had to use it...he he he )
It was really good as it held the shape while making the wheels and I could push them out through the bottom of the tin.....But really any tin will do.Use whatever you have on hand.

Step 1-put the nappies in a cake pan (this is like a mould) and gradually add more over lapping each one.I think I used about 16 nappies for each wheel.
Step 2--when you have finished use your hand to make a hole in the centre.
Step 3- (this is optional.Place a toilet roll into the hole you just made .This will help hold it together for later steps.
Step 4-Gradually ease out the nappies to nearly half way (i had the spring pan so I just released the bottom and did the same but from the bottom. When out half way use a large elastic band and put around wheel continue to push out.I put another elastic band on to hold it place.

Now you can take a breath ,this is the worst part and you have just made a wheel.Yeah.But now you have to make two more ha ha .Also I thought after that you could make the front wheel in a bigger tin  so it was larger than the other two.I thought of this after I made mine so I have 3 the same size.Next time (if ) they will be different. 2 small and 1 large.

Step 5- To cover the rubber band put a couple of pieces of double sided tape around the wheels then
use the ribbon to wrap around wheel.
Step 6-Not really a step but just do the other 2 wheels.
Step 7-I am an idiot-this isn't a step but just showing the 3 wheels totally finished.
Step 8- get one of your wraps and  before you start to roll it place a piece of ribbon or wool down the centre.Make sure it is twice the size as the wrap as you need to tie with it...

See it's not so bad here....Are you enjoying yourself yet ? I just made it look bad with 2 extra steps.Shame on me.....(but at least it looks better with  more pictures for me.....ha ha )

Step 8-Oops I already did that one......Great onto the next step....
Step 9-Thread the rolled wrap through the 1st wheel now second now 3rd  you wont have much wrap left but that is OK it is suppose to be like that.....
Step 10-pull the 2nd wheel to the front so it kind of looks like a triangle.Pull the ends of the wrap through the hole kinda like a circle and use the ribbon to tie it all together see picture..

This was the worst step.I had to work  it out a few times till i got it the way I thought it should look.
Step 11- Use little safety pins to help tie it all together. Remember that they will be bows on the outside so it will be covered...Roll the other wrap up the same way and push through the front wheel.

A safety pin is a girls best friend.....

Step 12-Use an elastic and bring the wrap together at the base..
Step 13-Now use one of your burp cloths and attach it with safety pins like shown in the picture to the wheel ribbon...
Step 14-  I now attached a bib to the front (sorry I forgot the picture) I used safety pins to make it stay in place. The bib should sit over the front wheel kinda like a mudflap...

Now sit back and admire your work as you are almost finished...
Step 15- Get your little socks and stuff each one with tissues. Next time I am going to use patterned socks as I think they blended in too much.

Step 16- Attach stuffed sock to one end of the wrap secure with a rubber band....

Step 17- Get your baby cup (that is what I used ) or a baby bottle and push it under the wrap so that it rests on the front wheel...Do you know what I mean?  It is suppose to be a headlight ....ooh now you understand me.....

To finish off your beautiful nappy cake you can attach the little Baby on Board sign like I have using string and safety pins.Or just leave blank.Make bows to be glued or pinned on the wheels where the hole is that you used to push your wraps through...

This the great thing about this project do whatever you want there is no rules just remember to breath and have fun...

Yeah my nappy cake is all finished. (no bows on wheels in these pictures sorry I jumped the gun )

I bought this cute teddy to sit on the bike just to finish it off.

Now while I was looking at this I was starting to hear that familiar grumblings in my head

"KEVIN !!!!"

"what'

"I don't like it .....something is wrong with it"

"Are you crazy it is fine Kerry will love it" and then Kev  gave me the look and walked off...

Then I though about the wheels and how I said I should do the front wheel bigger. Well that was it. I undid all my hard work and got out a larger tin .It was a 10inch round and I made my new wheel. I also decided to change the front bib as I didn't like it...So I remade the whole thing.Funny though it was easier the second time around ha ha

First go......                                                   Second and final go......

I am a happy mum now.I can show my face and hold my head up high .It looks beautiful....

I am really happy (now) at how it turned out.It looks like it is hard but it isn't it is just a bit fiddly but you can work it out.I really hope my steps are easy to follow but at least you will get the idea and if you are making this you must be already crafty so  you will be able to work it out....

And lastly the person who's opinion means the most to me is Kerry's and by the look on her face I think I made her happy.....

Oh LM put the sunglasses on Teddy's head because he said it looked "cool now"....

  4. Nappy Cakes are also very pretty items and they have the benefit of being extremely useful to new parents. The thoughtfulness of a Nappy Cake gift will be remembered long after all the flowers have been thrown out.
